Hair questions

Hey Guys and Gals! I’ve been getting so many questions about the same things, so I figured I would make a page to make it easier… so I wanted to address one of the main questions that everyone has been asking me all the time… “how do you get your hair Pink?”

Usually when people ask me that I tend to give them a questionable look as I simply answer, “… Hair dye..”

But what people are really asking is what labor goes into maintaining the color, length, and health of my hair. They want to know what products I use, how often I have to dye it, if I have to bleach my roots, etc…  Often times other girls will tell me they tried to keep pink hair (or another wonderful bright color) and it would never last, always fading and even damaging their hair..

I’ve never been secretive of my hair care tips or what products I use.. I went through years of dying and cutting my own hair, learning from trial and error of what works and what doesn’t. I had dozens of stylists over the years who gave me a range of different tips and advice and im still learning how to manage my pink lifestyle.

So before we begin I want to make it clear that I’m NOT a hairstylist, these are just tips and products that have worked for me in my own experience over the years and I hope they help you guys out in some way!

Ok here we go!

To start off, for those of you who are wondering, my natural hair color is a dark chestnut brown *gasp!*… I had been dying my hair blonde for a few years before I dyed it pink.. (I had bleached my hair until it turned white). I never had a problem with my hair falling out or “frying” (term Used for over stressed dried out hair that will break off, making your hair length shorter) but keep in mind I always had a stylist bleaching my hair- the one time i tried bleaching my roots myself is the only time my hair got seriously damaged. So this is where my first and biggest suggestion comes into play- DON’T use store brand bleach kits!!! ALWAYS have a stylist bleach your hair!!

Guys, bleaching your hair is where it gets risky.. you can easily ruin your hair if you try bleaching it yourself with a kit from walgreens (or wherever you buy it from) I urge you all to play it safe and go to a professional Stylist for the bleaching process..Again, preference is always key… If you’re more comfortable with doing it all yourself then by all means go ahead..

Last year I was out of town visiting my boyfriend in Raleigh for 2 months over winter break.. of course over the course of time I had horrible brown roots growing in about 1 1/2 inches long…. I figured after watching my own stylist bleach my roots so many times I could easily do it myself, so we went to the infamous SALLY’s beauty supply and picked up a bleach kit…. whatever happened it completely ruined my hair- I’m STILL trying to nurse my hair back to health and this was back in 2009!.. Just one little mistake with bleach can take years to fix..

So thats why I strongly suggest having a licensed stylist bleach your hair blonde before color. theres a BIG difference between store bought brands of hair dye and the brands that the professionals use…

* For locals in Denver Colorado- If you’re curious who does my hair heres a link to my salon and stylist : Christy-  http://www.luxedevilsalon.com/savants.php

Christy is by far the best Stylist I have EVER used EVER!!…. Lindsey does my bleach, color, cut and extensions.. She’s wonderful, I adore her.

So…Depending on how dark your hair is it may take more processes to get your hair light enough for the color. This does make a big difference in how the color looks in your hair… If you bleach your hair and it looks like a sandy dark blonde it will make the color look dark and dull.. this is why I suggest getting your hair as light as possible to get your color to pop! (may take three processes of bleaching.. (not all at once of course) to get your hair pale blonde) … this is another reason why you need to have a stylist to bleach your hair for you..

Also, that being said, roots growing in can be the most frustrating part of having colored hair.. believe me.. I know.. It sucks….

Okay on to the next part- COLOR!!

*After your hair is Bleached be sure to dry it before you put your color on or it wont process correctly. *

Heres where I reveal the product I use http://splathaircolor.com/indicolors.html

yep!.. SPLAT hair dye (PINK fetish)…. I really love this product, it’s not only effective and bright but its long lasting and permanent. Even though it says “temporary” on the box, I found that it’s actually very permanent… I cannot bleach it out or strip the color at all, this stuff stains!.. It does fade though (I even love the color it fades to) which is were maintaining the color becomes a little bit of a pain… if you’re looking to keep the pink (or whatever color you choose) be prepared to layer color on over the course of time to make it permanent. Splat also sells 16 other colors online only (In link above) ..

over two years of having pink hair I have used tons of different products, you name it- Manic Panic, Special Effects, Pravana, N’tense Pink, Directions, etc… nothing measures up to Splat hair dye, I really adore this product, its perfectly beautifully bright!

I loved Splat so much I became their poster girl! (thanks to my modeling career) You can see me in their adds in 17 Magazine, J-14, People, and Twist Magazine! I’ll be on the box next year so keep an eye out! I not only love their products I have greatly enjoyed working with them, they are so kind and wonderful to me!

Anyway, Last but not least I’ll talk about aftercare products (shampoo, masks, conditioner etc) to help you take care of your hair. bleaching and coloring is going to dry your hair out so it’s important to get a good conditioner and hair mask to take care of it. heres a list of the lines of products I use

Difiaba, Pureology, and Catwalk

Thats all for now, I’m running late now since I got carried away. Anyway I really hope this was helpful to anyone who’s looking to dye their hair and help them understand what sort of lifestyle in maintenance they should expect.. If you guys have any questions please feel free to let me know. And again, I want to stress that im not a trained stylist, so some of your questions might be best answered by a professional.

Good luck!
